Article: The Space Between

The Space Between

There is often a moment we don’t notice.

It sits between what happens and what we do next.

A message arrives.
A conversation shifts.
Something doesn’t go to plan.

And almost instantly, we respond.

We reply.
We react.
We move forward.

But in between, there is something else.

A small space.

It may only last a second.
It may feel almost invisible.

But it’s there.

And in that space, something important becomes possible.

Without that pause, everything can feel immediate.

We move from one moment to the next without question.
We respond quickly, often without fully understanding what we are responding to.

Over time, this becomes a pattern.

Reaction replaces reflection.
Urgency replaces clarity.

The space begins to disappear.

But when we begin to notice it, even briefly, something changes.

A single breath can be enough.

A moment to step back.
A moment to wait.
A moment to see things more clearly.

From there, our response shifts.

Not dramatically.
But subtly.

Words are chosen more carefully.
Decisions feel more considered.
Attention becomes more deliberate.

This is where intention begins.

Not in the action itself, but in the space before it.

The pause is not about slowing everything down.

It’s about creating just enough room to choose.

To ask what matters.
To decide how to move forward.

This doesn’t always happen perfectly.

The space can be missed.
The reaction can come first.

But with practice, it becomes easier to return to.

Again and again.

And over time, those small moments begin to shape something larger.

A different way of moving through the day.
A different way of responding to the world.

Not faster.

But clearer.

Because sometimes, the most important shift is not what we do.

It’s what happens in the space before we do it.
